Genesis is the story of stories, an eloquent telling of the first book of the Bible, a theatrical tour de force. With remarkable energy and a gift for storytelling that can prickle the back of your neck, McLean captures the humor and pathos in Genesis’ dramatic sweep from Eden to Babel, from the immense flood of Noah to Abraham’s heart-cleaving sacrifice of his son Isaac. Passionate, fallible men and women spring to life in a story that has inspired children and baffled scholars. You’ve never known Genesis like this. Chapter points are provided for the 133 minute color film, for easy access to the Book of Genesis.

“I could not recommend this production any higher.” – New Catholic Explorer

“…more compelling than watching a thousand extras raise the dust in a battle scene” – Chicago Tribune Recorded live in Chicago – VHS or DVD.

The Geneva Bible was a monumental achievement in the history of Protestant Bible translation. Born in a time of religious and political upheaval it helped foster scripture literacy among the common people of England.

The first English Bible to be fully translated from the original languages, the Geneva Bible was the product of some of the finest biblical scholars of its day. It was the first to feature many innovations in the field of Bible publishing:

Text printed in readable roman type

Division of the text into numbered verses

Italic type used for words not in the original languages

Marks placed over the accented syllables to aid in pronouncing proper names

Extensive textual and explanatory commentary placed in the margins

Words/phrases displayed at the heads of pages to promote scripture memorization

Maps and woodcuts illustrating biblical scenes included

Sold in a variety of sizes so many people could afford a household Bible

English settlers that voyaged to the New World favored the Geneva Bible. It is probable that the Geneva Bible came to America in 1607 and was used in the Jamestown colony. Thirteen years later the Pilgrims brought it with them on the Mayflower’s perilous voyage to religious freedom.

Features:

Facsimile of the University of Wisconsin Press edition of the 1560 Geneva Bible

Features clear, legible type throughout (marginal commentary is in smaller type)

Complete, original marginal commentary, maps and woodcut illustrations

Authoritative introduction to the Geneva Bible by Lloyd E. Berry

William Tyndale believed the Bible should be available in the vernacular—the common people’s speech. He famously declared, “The boy that driveth the plough shall know more of the Scripture than [an educated man].” Though forbidden by the Church to translate the New Testament into English, Tyndale’s determination resulted in its finally being printed in Germany in 1526. Smuggled into England, the Tyndale New Testament was a monumental success. The simple, direct language of many of its verses has resonated down the centuries.

William Tyndale’s legacy stems from his having translated the Scriptures in a way that made the most of the emerging English tongue. Bible collectors and anyone interested in the history of the English Bible will treasure this unique volume.

Co-publication with the renowned British Library

Facsimile of one of only two complete copies from Peter Schoeffer’s 1526 printing, held in the British Library’s collection

Features clear, legible type and original, color illustrations

Authoritative new introduction by David Daniell (Emeritus Professor of English Language and Literature at University College London; founder and first Chairman of the Tyndale Society)

Ribbon marker
