Institutes of the Christian Religion

Hendrickson offers a one-volume hardcover edition of one of Western Christianity’s foundational works. Re-typeset into a clean and modern typeface, this edition is easy to read for the modern eye. This book will appeal to libraries, seminarians, pastors, and laypeople. Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin is an introduction to the Bible and a vindication of Reformation principles by one of the Reformation’s finest scholars.

At the age of twenty-six, Calvin published several revisions of his Institutes of the Christian Religion, a seminal work in Christian theology that altered the course of Western history and that is still read by theological students today. It was published in Latin in 1536 and in his native French in 1541, with the definitive editions appearing in 1559 (Latin) and in 1560 (French). The book was written as an introductory textbook on the Protestant faith for those with some learning already and covered a broad range of theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone. It vigorously attacked the teachings of those Calvin considered unorthodox, particularly Roman Catholicism, to which Calvin says he had been “strongly devoted” before his conversion to Protestantism. The over-arching theme of the book—and Calvin’s greatest theological legacy—is the idea of God’s total sovereignty, particularly in salvation and election.

Day by Day with John Calvin: Selected Readings for Daily Reflection

Start your day with the truths that have shaped lives for centuries. Along with Martin Luther, John Calvin, the great scholar and Christian leader, was one of the central figures in the Protestant Reformation. A year’s worth of daily devotional readings taken from Calvin’s commentaries and from Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion, Of Prayer, and On the Christian Life have been compiled here for inspiration and meditation. Each of the 365 selections includes a Bible passage and a devotional reading on that passage. Be encouraged as Calvin’s profound insight, wisdom, and devotion reveal God’s grace.

Excerpts from Calvin’s commentaries were taken from the work done in the mid 1800s by the Calvin Translation Society. Excerpts from Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion, Of Prayer, and On the Christian Life were taken from the work of Henry Beveridge (1845).

Through the Year with Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483–1546) was a German monk whose teachings inspired the Reformation and deeply influenced the doctrines and culture of the Lutheran and Protestant traditions. Luther emphasized salvation based on faith in the merits of Jesus Christ alone and not on human efforts to earn God’s favor. At the heart of the gospel, in Luther’s estimation, was the doctrine of justification by faith—the teaching that Christ’s own righteousness is imputed to those who believe, and on that ground alone, they are accepted by God. Martin Luther dealt the symbolic blow that began the Reformation when he nailed his ninety-five theses to the door of the Wittenberg church. That document contained an attack on papal abuses and the sale of indulgences by Catholic Church officials.

In this volume the reader will find fifty of Martin Luther’s most significant sermons, selected and organized with the lay reader in mind. His sermons reflect the heart of his thoughts on the Christian faith and his ideas for practical life in that faith. The reader will gain a deeper understanding of Luther’s thinking on topics important to today’s Christian as well as insight into Luther’s contribution to Christian practice and thought.

The Bondage of the Will

First published in 1525, Martin Luther’s Bondage of the Will is acknowledged by theologians as one of the great masterpieces of the Reformation. It is Luther response to Desiderius Erasmus’ Diatribe on Free Will, written in his direct and unique style, combining deep spirituality with humor. Luther writes powerfully about man’s depravity and God’s sovereignty. The crucial issue for Luther concerned what ability free will has, and to what degree it is subject to God’s sovereignty. For Luther, this key issue of free will is directly connected to God’s plan of salvation. Is man able to save himself, or is his salvation entirely a work of divine grace? This work is vital to understanding the primary doctrines of the Reformation and will long remain among the great theological classics of Christian history.

Here I stand: A Life of Martin Luther

“I cannot.. I will not… recant! Here I stand.” This authoritative and inspiring story paints a vivid portrait of the crusader who spearheaded the Reformation. Considered one of the most readable biographies of Martin Luther, this volume is an illustrated look at the German religious reformer and his influence on Western civilization.

Martin Luther entered a monastery as a youth and as a man shattered the structure of the medieval church. Luther spoke out against the corrupt religious practices that then existed. His demand that the authority for doctrine and practice be Scriptures, rather than Popes or Councils, echoed around the world and ignited the Great Reformation. Accused of heresy and threatened with excommunication and death, Luther maintained his bold stand and refused to recant. In his crusade to eliminate religious abuses, he did more than any other man to establish the Protestant faith. With sound historical scholarship and penetrating insight, Roland Bainton examines Luther’s widespread influence. He re-creates the spiritual setting of the sixteenth century, showing Luther’s place within it and influence upon it. Richly illustrated with more than 100 woodcuts and engravings from Luther’s own time, Here I Stand dramatically brings to life Martin Luther, the great reformer.

Bainton published Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther in 1950. As of 2008, it is still in print. Kenneth Scott Latourette, in the chapter notes for “Luther and the Rise and Spread of Lutheranism” in his History of Christianity, lauds Bainton’s biography of Luther as “A superb combination of accurate scholarship based upon a thorough knowledge of the sources and secondary works with insight, vivid, readable literary style, and reproductions of contemporary illustrations. It also contains so valuable a bibliography as to render needless an extended one in this chapter.” In his chapter on Luther’s writings in Invitation to the Classics, Mark A. Noll singles out Bainton’s biography:

“Of the many superlative treatments, a half-century old study by Roland Bainton, Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther, has justly won a reputation as a classic work on a classic subject.”

In World War II, she and her family risked their lives to help Jews escape the Nazis by hiding them in their home in Haarlem, and their reward was a trip to Hitler’s concentration camps. Corrie’s father, sister, brother, and nephew died as a result of their imprisonment. But she survived and was released—as a result of a clerical error—and now shares the story of how faith triumphs over evil.

Author: Gilbert Keith Chesterton
Publication Date: September 2008

Chesterton’s Saint Francis of Assisi (1181–1226) is the popular biography of a beloved Christian saint and founder of the Franciscans, told by an equally beloved author and storyteller. It is an accessible, interesting and compelling story of a man known more by legend than fact. In this brilliant reflection on the poor friar of Assisi, G. K. Chesterton unfolds the life and times of St. Francis, from his conversion as a young man to his receiving of the stigmata at the end of his life. While many modern biographers stumble in their effort to grasp the essence of the saint, Chesterton shows that Francis’ entire life—his prayer, his poverty, his asceticism, his love of creation, and all his eccentricities—flowed from his profound love for Christ and all men.

Author: William Wilberforce
Publication Date: 2006Wilberforce’s classic work, A Practical View of Christianity, is concerned with convincing those who call themselves Christians to pursue “the real nature and principles of the religion which they profess.” Christianity is not a mere morality, to be held in private. Christianity is revelation from God, bringing new rights and correspondent duties. It is an entire way of life that requires diligence and study and that should affect every aspect of the Christian’s public and private life. This addition to the Hendrickson Christian Classics series has been completely retypeset. An index, explanatory notes, scripture references, translations of Latin phrases, bibliographic information, and other helps ensure that this work will be as valuable to today’s reader as it was to those readers who made A Practical View of Christianity a bestseller for fifty years.

Author: Abraham Kuyper
Publication Date: 2008Lectures on Calvinism offers a timeless exploration of the theology and thinking of key reformer John Calvin. These six classic lectures by distinguished scholar Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920) on the key figure in Reformation theology were delivered at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1898. Kuyper introduces Calvinism as a life-system, discussing its relationship to religion, politics, science, and art. According to Kuyper, Calvinism seeks to unify the cosmos under universal laws. For instance, he states that predestination proves that a set of laws exists to govern the world, and science is merely trying to figure them out. Kuyper defends Calvinism in the realm of art as well, providing a thorough and elegant explanation of this outlook on life. The collection is called Lectures on Calvinism and not lectures on Christianity because Kuyper believed that Calvinism most truthfully and most completely articulates the Biblical Christian faith.

Widely recognized as a great theologian, an influential preacher and a prolific writer, Jonathan Edwards played a prominent role in helping to spark the spirit of revivalism known as the Great Awakening in the eighteenth-century America. Edwards’ sermons, while intellectually engaging, were also accessible to the common people and often generated highly emotional responses. His foremost desire was to help people transform from mere believers in Christian doctrine to converted Christians who were moved to action by the principles of their belief. This two-volume collection of Edwards’ works features important sermons of the Great Awakening as well as Edwards’ memoirs and other essays. First published in 1834, here is what makes this new edition of The Works of Jonathan Edwards the best available:

More readable. This edition has larger, more readable type than previous editions.

More complete. This edition contains all matter included in the first collected American edition, various original extracts from the diary and papers of Edwards, several smaller pieces printed originally in a separate form, and a memoir by descendant Sereno E. Dwight.

For anyone interested in the roots of Christianity and revival in colonial America, The Works of Jonathan Edwards is a fundamental resource.

“Jonathan Edwards . . . was among the noblest and ablest Christians of his age, and can now be seen, two centuries after, as one of the greatest theologians ever given by God to his church. As a saint and scholar, evangelist and educationalist, pastor and teacher, missionary and metaphysician, he showed a grasp of the grandeur of God’s sovereignty and the glory of divine grace equaled only by men of the caliber of John Owen and John Calvin.”
—J. I. Packer

“Edwards is widely recognized as being probably the greatest American theologian. His writings, though sometimes difficult, are often inspiring. Full doctrinal agreement is not a prerequisite to profiting from this great man of God.”

I love this classic book! I read this aloud to my family every November to help us remember what the Pilgrims went through to come to America. It certainly helps us to be more thankful for the amazing freedoms we enjoy in America today!

This book certainly makes my top 5 list for favorite history books of all time. Written by Pilgrim Governor William Bradford as a history of the Plymouth Settlement from 1608 – 1650, this book lays out the real reasons the Pilgrims came to America (it was not for religious freedom). Bradford explains in great detail why the Pilgrims came to America, how they settled the land, and how God provided for them every step of the way. A true classic, this is a hardcover reprint edition, published by Vision Forum and Mantle Ministries. Bradford’s original work is unedited and unabridged. This is one classic that every Christian should have in their library.
