Author: Gilbert Keith Chesterton
Publication Date: September 2008

Chesterton’s Saint Francis of Assisi (1181–1226) is the popular biography of a beloved Christian saint and founder of the Franciscans, told by an equally beloved author and storyteller. It is an accessible, interesting and compelling story of a man known more by legend than fact. In this brilliant reflection on the poor friar of Assisi, G. K. Chesterton unfolds the life and times of St. Francis, from his conversion as a young man to his receiving of the stigmata at the end of his life. While many modern biographers stumble in their effort to grasp the essence of the saint, Chesterton shows that Francis’ entire life—his prayer, his poverty, his asceticism, his love of creation, and all his eccentricities—flowed from his profound love for Christ and all men.

His life was characterized by prayer, faith, and self-denial in the cause of Christ. Author: William Wilberforce
Publication Date: 2006

Wilberforce’s classic work, A Practical View of Christianity, is concerned with convincing those who call themselves Christians to pursue “the real nature and principles of the religion which they profess.” Christianity is not a mere morality, to be held in private. Christianity is revelation from God, bringing new rights and correspondent duties. It is an entire way of life that requires diligence and study and that should affect every aspect of the Christian’s public and private life.

This addition to the Hendrickson Christian Classics series has been completely retypeset. An index, explanatory notes, scripture references, translations of Latin phrases, bibliographic information, and other helps ensure that this work will be as valuable to today’s reader as it was to those readers who made A Practical View of Christianity a bestseller for fifty years.

Publication Date: 2006

“God cannot do some things unless we work. He stores the hills with marble, but He has never built a cathedral. He fills the mountains with iron ore, but He never makes a needle or a locomotive. He leaves that to us. We must work. Publication Date: 2006

“God makes it quite clear in his Word that he has only one answer to every human need—his Son, Jesus Christ. In all his dealings with us he works by taking us out of the way and substituting Christ in our place. The Son of God died instead of us for our forgiveness: he lives instead of us for our deliverance. So we can speak of two substitutions—a Substitute on the Cross who secures our forgiveness and a Substitute within who secures our victory.”

An early leader in what became China’s phenomenal house church movement, Watchman Nee (1903-1972) spent the last 20 years of his life in a communist prison. This powerful meditation brings the daily reality of following Christ into sharp focus.

Author: A.W. Tozer
Publication Date: 2009

Hendrickson presents two classic works on the Holy Spirit by A. W. Tozer, together in one volume for the first time. A superb addition to the best-selling Hendrickson Christian Classics series, Life in the Spirit combines Tozer’s How to Be Filled with the Spirit and The Counselor: Straight Talk About the Holy Spirit from a Twentieth Century Prophet.

In Tozer’s own words, How to be Filled with the Holy Spirit “was made available to the Christian public with the prayer that it may lead thirsty believers to the fountain of living waters.” Since its publication, hundreds of thousands of copies of this practical yet deeply devotional guide have been sold. How to be Filled with the Holy Spirit will refresh and open the reader to the filling of the Holy Spirit.

In The Counselor, Tozer speaks to the current conflict and confusion about the Holy Spirit from a balanced, biblical perspective—not academic, but practical. Tozer promises that the Holy Spirit “is willing—yes, willing—to do for us all that Jesus would do if He were here on earth.” The chapters of this book were originally preached as sermons at Southside Alliance Church in Chicago. Whether spoken or written, Tozer’s words were designed to “promote personal heart religion” among God’s people.

Spurgeon’s own commentary on every verse of the Psalms is extremely insightful, and by itself it would have been rich enough for posterity. But there’s much more in The Treasury of David. You’ll find a wealth of illuminating extracts and quotes from hundreds of commentators—contemporaries of Spurgeon as well as the great Puritan expositors of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Preachers and teachers will appreciate the homiletical hints on almost every verse, concise sermon outlines, and provocative seed thoughts. Useful bibliographies and an index of authors offer more practical help.

Whether you’re teaching on the Psalms, studying them for personal devotions, or simply intrigued by the writings of Spurgeon, you’ll enjoy this splendid classic.

I love this classic book! I read this aloud to my family every November to help us remember what the Pilgrims went through to come to America. It certainly helps us to be more thankful for the amazing freedoms we enjoy in America today!

This book certainly makes my top 5 list for favorite history books of all time. Written by Pilgrim Governor William Bradford as a history of the Plymouth Settlement from 1608 – 1650, this book lays out the real reasons the Pilgrims came to America (it was not for religious freedom). Bradford explains in great detail why the Pilgrims came to America, how they settled the land, and how God provided for them every step of the way. A true classic, this is a hardcover reprint edition, published by Vision Forum and Mantle Ministries. Bradford’s original work is unedited and unabridged. This is one classic that every Christian should have in their library.
